Time for Turkey
Whitetails Unlimited is a deer organizationthat's what we are, and that's what we do. But let's face it: getting outside for the spring turkey season is great fun! And here are some practical tips from staff and friends of WTU. Take a plastic bag (quart-sized Ziplock works great) with a rubber band and pen with you. Use the pen to fill out your tag, and then put the bag over the head to carry your bird out of the woods. This will keep the blood off the backs of your legs. Scout as much as you can, and bend your knees! Look at the terrain from the sitting position you will be in as you are hunting, not just standing as you walk the area. That three-foot difference in sightlines can make a dramatic difference. When you pick your final spot, make sure you will be comfortable, and bring with you anything you need to ensure your comfort. Having a wet behind, sore back, leg cramp, or large root sticking you in a tender spot will make you move and fidget, alerting your prey and making sure you are miserable. If you are hunting on someone else's property, make sure you thank them, and be a good steward of their land while you are their guest. Turkeys have great eyesight, so set up your position in the shade, and be sure that as the sun moves you will remain in the shade. Don't forget to load your gun after you settle into your position. If you are going to be out for an extended amount of time, bring some water to drink with you, but relieve yourself before settling in to your position so you don't have to move later. If you bring a snack, be sure the packaging will not make any noise; and when you eat or drink do it slowly without obvious movement. Pattern your gun every season, and try a variety of ammunition so you know for sure how your shotgun shoots at a variety of ranges. You may be surprised to find your shotgun has a preference of ammo brand. Finally, take someone new turkey hunting with you! There has to be someone you know that will want to goa child, friend, co-worker, or spouse. Help them out with gear and your knowledge, until they are hooked too.
And don't forget to send us a photo of the turkey you bag this spring, and we'll get it on our website in the WTU Photo Showcase. Send a digital image and a brief description of who, what, when and where, to firstname.lastname@example.org, and then just tell your friends to go to www.whitetailsunlimited.com, and click on the Photo Showcase link to see the Tom they should have bagged!
